SUMMARY: The Family & Consumer Sciences (CTE) Teacher develops and leads an innovative Career and Technical Education program that prepares students with the knowledge, technical skills, leadership abilities, and real-world experiences necessary for success in college, careers, family life, and their communities. Through engaging, hands-on instruction, the teacher helps students explore topics such as human development, child development, family studies, interpersonal relationships, nutrition and wellness, financial literacy, life management, consumer education, and career pathways.

 

The Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher creates authentic learning experiences that connect classroom instruction to real-world applications through project-based learning, leadership development, community partnerships, career exploration, and work-based learning opportunities. The teacher fosters a supportive and culturally responsive learning environment where students develop confidence, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a strong sense of personal and community responsibility.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive Family & Consumer Sciences CTE program aligned with Washington State CTE standards, graduation requirements, and industry-relevant practices.
  • Design and deliver engaging, hands-on, project-based learning experiences that connect academic content to practical life, career, and community applications.
  • Teach courses that may include child development, human development, family studies, financial literacy, nutrition and wellness, consumer education, interpersonal relationships, career exploration, leadership development, and related Family & Consumer Sciences topics.
  • Create learning experiences that promote critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, leadership, and career readiness skills.
  • Establish a positive, inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that supports student engagement, achievement, and personal growth.
  • Integrate Indigenous perspectives, tribal values, community resources, and culturally sustaining practices into instruction whenever appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with families, community organizations, tribal programs, colleges, businesses, and industry professionals to expand student learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate and support career-connected learning opportunities including guest speakers, field experiences, service-learning projects, internships, job shadows, work-based learning activities, and community partnerships.
  • Promote and support student participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), leadership activities, competitions, and career exploration events.
  • Assess student learning using a variety of formative and summative measures and use data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, competency documentation, and CTE program records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, teachers, families, and support staff to promote student success and remove barriers to learning.
  • Participate in curriculum development, program evaluation, CTE improvement planning, and grant-funded initiatives as assigned.
  • Maintain CTE program compliance, equipment, inventories, safety standards, and instructional materials.
  • Participate in professional learning and maintain current knowledge of Family & Consumer Sciences content, CTE requirements, workforce trends, and instructional best practices.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

 

Pathway 1: Fully Certificated Teacher

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences; or
  • Eligibility to obtain the appropriate Washington State CTE endorsement prior to employment.

 

OR

 

Pathway 2: Industry Professional

  • Eligibility to obtain a Washington State CTE Conditional Certificate, Initial CTE Certificate, or other OSPI-approved CTE certification based on occupational experience in Family and Consumer Sciences or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated industry experience, training, education, or professional expertise in one or more Family and Consumer Sciences-related fields, including but not limited to child development, early learning, family studies, human services, consumer sciences, nutrition, hospitality, culinary arts, education, financial literacy, or related disciplines.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Washington State Family and Consumer Sciences CTE endorsement.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, Education, Human Development, Child Development, Family Studies, Nutrition, Consumer Sciences, Hospitality, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching in a secondary, CTE, tribal, or alternative educational setting.
  • Experience developing career pathways, work-based learning opportunities, internships, or community partnerships.
  • Experience advising student leadership organizations, CTSOs, clubs, or extracurricular activities.
  • Experience working with Native American students, tribal communities, or culturally diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and relationship-centered instructional practices.

 

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Educational technology, digital learning tools, and instructional resources that support student learning and program management.
  • Current trends, emerging issues, and career opportunities within Family and Consumer Sciences-related fields.

  • Facilitate student leadership activities, career development experiences, and participation in CTSOs or similar programs.
  • Use student performance data and program outcomes to evaluate effectiveness and improve instruction.
  • Manage multiple responsibilities, timelines, projects, records, and compliance requirements effectively and efficiently.
  • Adapt instruction, learning experiences, and program activities to meet the diverse needs, interests, and strengths of students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, staff, community members, and external partners.
  • Exercise professional judgment, initiative, creativity, and problem-solving in support of student success and program growth.
  • Represent Chief Leschi Schools positively while strengthening connections among students, families, the Tribe, and the broader community.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Building Principal or Designee

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position. Workplace accommodations may be provided in accordance with CLS Tribal policy.

  • Employees may be required to sit or stand for extended periods and perform tasks involving reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and fine motor coordination.
  • This position may require regularly lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, with appropriate assistance or equipment as needed.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed in an indoor educational environment with moderate noise levels. Employees may work in and/or proximity to classrooms, students, and standard office or instructional equipment. Conditions may vary based on program needs.
